The Zone 3 Cougars, representing the Fraser Valley, won gold in women’s soccer at the 55+ BC Games in Nanaimo last week, ending the long run of champions Island Force. The final took place on Sept. 13 at Beban Park under clear weather conditions. The Cougars defeated Island Force 3–1 to secure the top spot.
The standings came down to the fourth round of play to decide which teams advanced to the finals. The Cougars went on an impressive run, allowing only two goals in five matches. The team is made up mostly of Tri-Cities players who also compete in the Metro Women’s Soccer League. For tournament play, they often bring in additional players to complete the roster.
The Games used an 8-aside format with rolling substitutions and no offsides, creating a fast-paced style of play that kept fans engaged. Seven teams competed in the division.
Organizers said sportsmanship and camaraderie were central to the event. Many of the women from the teams often travel together for international tournaments. The victory adds to the Fraser Valley’s record of success at the 55+ BC Games, which bring together thousands of athletes over multiple sports each year. The Cougars received their gold medals on Sept. 13 at Beban Park, Nanaimo.
