Coquitlam RCMP is warning residents about phone scams after reports that fraudsters have used the Burquitlam Community Police Office number (604-949-5000) in multiple fraud attempts.

The scams involve “caller ID spoofing,” where criminals manipulate phone numbers to make it appear as though the call is coming from police. Victims are told they are under investigation for a crime, and scammers attempt to obtain personal or financial information.

“Scammers are pretending to be police officers to scare people into providing personal information,” said Acting Sgt. George Han, media relations officer for Coquitlam RCMP. “If you ever get a call that doesn’t feel right, even if it looks like it’s coming from the police, hang up and call the Coquitlam RCMP directly at 604-945-1550.”

Police have released several tips on how to protect yourself from caller ID spoofing scams:

  • If you are not expecting a call or don’t recognize the number, let it go to voicemail.

  • Scammers can manipulate the caller ID to make it look like a call is coming from Coquitlam RCMP.

  • If you are unsure about the legitimacy of a call, do not interact with any prompts.

  • If someone claims to be from Coquitlam RCMP, ask for their name, file number, and reason for the call, then hang up and call 604-945-1550.

  • Never share personal or financial information over the phone unless you initiated the call and know who you are speaking to.

  • Police will never use financial information to verify your identity.

More information about spoofing scams is available on the BC RCMP website.

Anyone who believes they have been targeted should contact Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550. Incidents can also be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or online.
