The City of Vancouver will implement a one-way vehicle traffic pilot along Canada Place, between Howe and Burrard streets, beginning mid-April and running through December 2025. The initiative aims to improve pedestrian safety and streamline vehicle flow in one of the city’s busiest areas, especially ahead of the busy cruise ship season.
The change converts the stretch from two-way to one-way traffic, allowing vehicles to enter from Howe Street and exit via Burrard or Thurlow Street. City officials expect the move to reduce pedestrian-vehicle conflict points and enhance safety for cruise ship passengers navigating the terminal at Canada Place. It also intends to improve circulation for tour buses, taxis, and other service vehicles.
The pilot coincides with the spring/summer cruise season’s start, bringing more than 300 cruise ships and approximately 1.2 million passengers through Vancouver annually.
This effort is part of a broader city initiative to improve pedestrian infrastructure. In 2023, the City completed significant sidewalk repairs along 200 Howe Street near Waterfront Station to address safety concerns and maintain access. In a press release, the city said Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, the Vancouver Convention Centre, and other stakeholders will work with City staff to monitor the pilot’s outcomes. If successful, the traffic change could become permanent.
