After a two-year investigation, the Coquitlam RCMP have laid charges against two individuals in connection with a stabbing incident that occurred in Port Coquitlam in June 2022.

Shane Aston Gero, 23, of Port Coquitlam, and an unnamed youth, also from Port Coquitlam, are facing charges of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The youth cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The incident occurred shortly after 1 am on June 4, 2022, near Central Elementary School, located at 2260 Central Avenue in Port Coquitlam. Coquitlam RCMP frontline officers responded to reports of a stabbing at that time. The BC Prosecution Service approved charges against Gero and the youth on June 25, 2025. Coquitlam RCMP subsequently arrested both individuals on July 2, 2025.

Acting Sergeant John Graham, Media Relations Officer for the Coquitlam RCMP, stated, “After a complex and thorough investigation by the Coquitlam RCMP General Duty Section, which was the initiating investigative section, and the Coquitlam RCMP General Investigation Section, multiple charges against Shane Gero and the youth were approved.”

Graham emphasized the detachment’s commitment to public safety, adding, “Members of the Coquitlam RCMP work proactively every day to help ensure our communities and neighbourhoods are free of violence, but when such incidents do occur, we work tirelessly to bring those responsible to our courts. The result of this protracted investigation is a testament to the dedicated operational and investigative police efforts of our team.”

Shane Gero remains in custody as the courts determine the next steps in his case. The courts have released the unnamed youth with various conditions pending the outcome of the judicial process.
