Woodfibre LNG has received approval from the BC Environmental Assessment Office, the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada, and the Squamish Nation to bring in a second floating workforce accommodation vessel to support construction of its liquefied natural gas facility near Squamish according to a press release by Woodfibre LNG.
According to the release, the new floatel, named MV Saga X, will provide 642 additional rooms and create up to 900 new jobs. The vessel will house skilled tradespeople working on site as the project moves toward completion.
“The second floatel is a critical part of delivering this project safely, responsibly and on schedule,” said Luke Schauerte, CEO of Woodfibre LNG. “By doubling onsite housing capacity, we can support more Canadian jobs today and sustain our construction momentum.”
The first floatel, MV Isabelle X, has been operating at the site since June 2024. Woodfibre LNG says housing workers onboard helps reduce pressure on Squamish’s housing market and public services.
The MV Saga X is expected to arrive in Vancouver on November 12 for final refits and inspections before being moved to the Woodfibre site later in the month.
Under the same regulatory conditions as the first floatel, workers aboard will not access Squamish and non-local staff will travel to the vessel via private ferry from Vancouver. All residents must complete cultural and gender safety training and follow a strict code of conduct.
Vancouver-based Bridgemans will operate the new floatel, managing daily operations once the vessel is moored.
