Second-Degree Murder Charge Laid in Coquitlam Homicide

Staff report
August 13, 2025 10:58am

A 59-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder following a fatal assault in Coquitlam earlier this month.

On August 1, 2025, at around 6:19 a.m., Coquitlam RCMP responded to reports of an assault with a weapon in the 400 block of Midvale Street. Officers arrived to find a man suffering from serious injuries. He was transported to hospital but later died.

Police secured the scene and arrested a suspect. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took over the case, working alongside the Lower Mainland Forensic Identification Services and the BC Coroners Service.

The BC Prosecution Service initially charged 59-year-old Steven Mosdell with aggravated assault on August 1. That charge was upgraded to second-degree murder on August 13.

IHIT says the victim and Mosdell knew each other. “We’re asking anyone with information about this incident to please contact IHIT immediately,” said Corporal Esther Tupper.

Investigators are seeking witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the 400 block of Midvale Street between 5:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. on August 1. Tips can be directed to the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or emailed to ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
