A woman is facing impaired driving charges after cutting off a marked police cruiser while exiting a local pub in Port Moody on Friday evening. Officers pulled her over and determined she was impaired and had a prior history of impaired driving. She is now facing Criminal Code charges, a driving prohibition, and vehicle impoundment.
The incident was one of several troubling traffic violations in Port Moody in recent days, as police ramp up enforcement for May, designated as High-Risk Driving Awareness Month in B.C. On Saturday evening, an officer clocked a speeding vehicle on Barnet Highway and found the driver impaired. The driver was issued a 90-day driving prohibition, and their vehicle was impounded.
Two more incidents occurred on Monday. In the afternoon, a driver was caught texting while approaching a busy crosswalk in a school zone during pick-up time. The motorist was found to have an invalid licence and received several tickets, a further driving suspension, and an impoundment.
Later that evening, a novice driver was stopped for violating license restrictions. Police determined the driver was impaired and issued a 90-day driving ban along with an impoundment. That night, another officer caught a vehicle travelling 154 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Barnet Highway. The driver faces charges under the Motor Vehicle Act and had their vehicle impounded.
“Motorists play a significant role in road safety,” said Const. Sam Zacharias. “Please remember to slow down, leave the phone alone while driving, and plan a safe ride if your plans involve alcohol or other impairing substances.”
