Port Moody City Council has awarded 13-year-old Spencer Moore the 2025 Youth Sports Award for his contributions to para hockey and lacrosse in the Lower Mainland. Moore received the honour at a council meeting on December 9, according to a press release by the City of Port Moody. The award is part of the City’s Civic Awards program and recognizes youth aged 12 to 19 who have furthered the growth, reputation, or character of sport.

“On behalf of Council and the community, I would like to congratulate Port Moody resident Spencer Moore and thank him for his dedication to hockey and lacrosse, and his efforts to encourage youth to get involved,” Mayor Meghan Lahti said in the release.

Lahti added that Moore is “an exceptional young athlete who has made positive contributions to the accessible sports movement in the Lower Mainland.”

Moore began playing para ice hockey—formerly known as sledge hockey—at age 10. According to the city, he has since competed at provincial championships against top athletes from the Pacific Northwest and is one of the founding members of the Surrey Canucks, the only youth para ice hockey team in the Lower Mainland.

After his first hockey season, Moore took up lacrosse through Lacrossing Barriers, a national program. He learned to play with the Coquitlam Adanacs, who won the Minto Cup that year, and learned how to use a sport wheelchair and lacrosse stick. The city said Moore is now known for his powerful shot.

Moore currently serves as Lacrossing Barriers’ West Coast Senior Ambassador, encouraging other youth to try the sport.

The Youth Sports Award is open for nominations every two years between January and April, with one award presented per cycle. Port Moody’s Youth Focus Committee reviews nominations and forwards a recommendation to council for final decision. Recipients’ names are added to a permanent plaque and submitted memorabilia items are displayed at the Recreation Complex for at least one year.
