The City of Port Moody is looking for a contractor to provide pest control services at 45 city-owned sites, including civic buildings, recreation centers, and emergency services facilities.
Pest concerns across city facilities include mice, rats, wasps, pigeons, silverfish, raccoons, cockroaches, bedbugs, mosquitoes, and skunks. The city called for proposals this week, looking for a company that can handle regular inspections and pest management. The contract is expected to begin later this year.
The RFP notes that the city wants to prevent pest problems before they start, using sustainable methods that reduce the need for chemical treatments. Services under the contract will include routine monthly or quarterly visits and emergency call-outs when urgent pest issues arise.
“Pest prevention is the city’s preferred approach,” the RFP states, “with a strong emphasis on minimizing the use of pesticides and insecticides whenever possible.”
Contractors must follow B.C.’s Integrated Pest Management Act and meet the city’s own Pesticide Use Control Bylaw. That includes using humane traps for birds and small animals and tamper-proof bait stations for rodents that don’t rely on anticoagulant poisons, which can harm other wildlife.
Once the city selects a contractor, the company will take part in site visits to evaluate pest conditions at each location. The city will also require detailed monthly reports outlining where and when service occurred, what pests were found, treatments used, and any future recommendations. Photographs of affected areas must be included with each report, the RFP notes.
The contract will last for two years, with an option to extend for up to three more.
