Break-and-enter files almost doubled in Port Moody last year compared to 2023, according to an annual community report by the Port Moody Police.

In 2023, there were 40 incidents of break-ins in Port Moody. That number soared to 75 in 2024, a 87.5 percent jump, according to the crime report. Homes accounted for 28 percent of the break-and-enter cases, businesses for 13.3 percent, and other premises for 58.7 percent.

“Our community continues to battle many aspects of criminal activity,” said David Fleugel, Chief of Police. “In 2024, we experienced increases in the number of calls related to mental health. We also have seen increases in crimes against person and property crime. The increases are not dramatic, but with small numbers, percentages can appear concerning. “We continue to make every effort to push the frequency of these crimes down.

Property crime also edged higher.  Officers recorded 1,383 property-crime incidents, up 15.1 per cent from 1,202 in 2023. Crimes against persons followed a similar trend, rising 47.5 percent to 882 files. Auto theft increased by 46.4 per cent, with 41 vehicles reported stolen, while theft from auto decreased by 21.2 per cent to 86 incidents. The report defines auto theft as the theft of a vehicle and theft-from-auto as the removal of items from inside or attached to a vehicle.

Road-safety enforcement remained busy: police issued 3,048 traffic tickets and 1,306 warnings, handled 249 impaired-driving files, stopped 55 drivers travelling more than 40 km/h over the limit and investigated 201 collisions.

Files with a mental-health component totalled 746, including 139 dedicated mental-health investigations—up 39 per cent year over year. Staff also processed 2,464 police-record checks and 322 Freedom-of-Information requests, and registered 24 bicycles through the 529 Garage recovery program.

Police put the 2024 property-crime rate at 41.24 incidents per 1,000 residents and the crimes-against-person rate at 26.3 per 1,000.
