Coquitlam RCMP is warning residents after two recent distraction thefts in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam. In a release issued on Nov. 20, police said groups of suspects are approaching people in public spaces and stealing jewelry while engaging them in conversation.
According to the release, the first incident involved a resident working in their yard who was approached by several people offering a necklace and a ring. As one suspect placed the necklace around the resident’s neck, another removed the victim’s own necklace without them noticing.
In the second case, police said a group in a vehicle asked a pedestrian for directions. As the victim neared the car, one person grabbed their arm while another swapped the victim’s gold necklace with a fake item.
Police noted that the suspects share several common behaviours. According to the release, they often drive rented out-of-province vehicles, appear friendly or personable, travel with family members, including children, and attempt to sell or offer jewelry at unusually low prices.
They may also share emotional stories to gain sympathy and try to get physically close to potential victims.
Acting Sgt. George Han, media relations officer for Coquitlam RCMP, said the suspects rely heavily on distraction. “These suspects rely on distraction and prey on victims’ compassion to commit their crimes,” Han said in the notice. “If something feels off, trust your instincts and keep your distance.”
Police are urging residents not to allow strangers to touch them, remain aware during everyday activities, and walk away from anyone behaving suspiciously. Anyone targeted in a similar incident is asked to contact their local detachment.
