A Port Coquitlam couple’s spur-of-the-moment decision to buy a lottery ticket has paid off with a $500,000 win from the October 21, Lotto Max Extra draw.

According to the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC), Sang Eun Lee and Myung Jun Kim were shopping together when they decided to purchase a ticket on a whim. The winning ticket was bought at a lotto kiosk inside Coquitlam Centre.

“I was at home when I scanned the ticket on the [BCLC Lotto!] app and saw it was a winner,” said Lee. “I didn’t believe my eyes. My husband was at the gym and I had him come home to show him.”

The couple said they plan to take their time before making any major financial decisions. “We are trying to stay calm and make good decisions. No big purchases right away,” said Kim. Lee added that the unexpected win “gives us more freedom of choice.”

So far in 2025, B.C. lottery players have claimed more than $42 million in winnings from the Extra and over $232 million from Lotto Max, according to BCLC.

BCLC reminds players that tickets can be purchased at lottery retailers or online through PlayNow.com, and that resources for healthy play are available at GameSense.com.
