Mayor Meghan Lahti is calling for the return of a free summer shuttle to connect parts of Port Moody to Rocky Point Park, a move she says would boost accessibility and cut congestion in a popular local destination.

The council will discuss the proposal tomorrow. Lahti proposes a pilot “Shoreline Shuttle” service, which would operate on Fridays through Sundays from June 1 to August 31, 2026. The shuttle would link Inlet Centre and parts of Moody Centre with Rocky Point Park.  The shuttle would be funded through revenues from the city’s pay parking program, which had a reserve of $72,500 as of the end of 2024.

Staff is being asked to report back by September 2025 with a project plan and cost estimates for the pilot ‘Shoreline Shuttle’ service.

“This is about making Rocky Point more accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford to pay for parking,” Lahti said in her report. “It’s a way to support local tourism, reduce traffic and emissions, and create a better experience for residents and visitors alike.”

The mayor said the shuttle also promotes the use of alternative transportation by providing a convenient option for those who might otherwise drive, reducing the number of vehicles on the road. “As more people opt for the shuttle instead of personal vehicles, the overall traffic congestion in the busy areas can decrease, leading to improved safety and a more pleasant environment for pedestrians,” she noted.

Port Moody operated a similar free shuttle in 2018, which was discontinued due to a lack of funding. The new plan proposes utilizing excess parking revenue from pay parking to make the shuttle a possibility.
