The Province has set a five-year housing target of 6,481 new homes in Coquitlam, effective Sept. 1, 2025.
In a news release Thursday, the Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs said Coquitlam is one of 10 municipalities to receive targets under the housing-targets program. Together, these communities are expected to build 38,930 new homes by 2030.
Coquitlam is the only Tri-City municipality included in this round of housing targets. Other communities are Burnaby, Courtenay, the Township of Langley, Langford, Penticton, Pitt Meadows, Richmond, Squamish, and Vernon.
The targets reflect 75% of each municipality’s projected housing need. More than 14,000 of the new homes across B.C. are planned as below-market rentals, with some including on-site supports.
“With a total of 38,930 homes, the fourth group of communities is set to boost housing supply over the next five years,” the ministry said in its release.
Guidelines also recommend the mix of housing by size and tenure, outlining how many units should be rentals, owned, or below-market. The Province said the program will help communities keep up with demand and address projected population growth.
The housing targets are part of the Province’s strategy under the Housing Supply Act and its broader Homes for People action plan. Since 2017, more than 93,250 homes have been delivered or are underway across B.C., with 16,000 new homes already built in the first 30 communities that received targets.
The Province said it will also use data from the program to work with the federal government on infrastructure and amenity investments to support communities meeting their housing goals.
