Coquitlam RCMP are warning residents to be vigilant after a recent spike in residential break and enters across the city, according to a press release issued by the Coquitlam RCMP on Dec. 18.
Police say they have received about 21 reports of residential break-ins since Nov. 23, with suspects most often entering homes through rear sliding glass doors. The incidents have largely occurred between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m.
According to Coquitlam RCMP, many of the targeted homes back onto green spaces, trails, or rear alleys. Police are asking residents in these areas to take extra precautions and report suspicious activity immediately.

“We are actively investigating this recent series of break and enters in our community,” said Sgt. Brent Misquita of the Coquitlam RCMP STRIKE Force. “Our officers are working diligently to identify those responsible and keep our community safe.”
Misquita added that public awareness and timely reporting can play a critical role in identifying suspects and preventing further incidents.
Police are advising residents to secure doors and windows, activate home alarm systems, and avoid hiding spare keys outside or in vehicles. Installing security cameras, using timers or smart devices to create the appearance of occupancy, and asking a trusted person to check on homes while away are also recommended.
Coquitlam RCMP are also encouraging residents to join or start a local Block Watch group, a free community-based program that shares crime prevention information tailored to specific neighbourhoods. More information is available through the Coquitlam RCMP website.
