Coquitlam RCMP have relaunched their annual “Grinch Watch” campaign to deter shoplifting and other seasonal theft as holiday shopping ramps up across the city. In a press release issued Dec. 10, police said officers will increase proactive patrols in high-risk retail areas throughout December.

According to Coquitlam RCMP, December is one of the busiest shopping months of the year and typically brings a rise in retail theft and vehicle break-ins. The enhanced patrols are aimed at improving safety for both shoppers and businesses during the holiday rush.

“December is a time for celebration; however, it also brings an increase in retail theft and vehicle break-ins as criminals take advantage of the holiday rush,” said Insp. Veronica Fox of the Coquitlam RCMP. She added that officers are focused on maintaining a safe environment for residents, shoppers and store owners.

Grinch Watch will concentrate on known retail hotspots and high-theft locations where incidents historically increase during the festive season. Police officers and volunteers will maintain a strong, visible presence and work directly with local businesses to identify and respond to suspicious activity.

According to the RCMP, the campaign also includes a public awareness component, encouraging shoppers and retail staff to remain alert and report suspicious behaviour. Police say timely reporting plays a key role in preventing theft and catching repeat offenders.

Residents are asked to call the Coquitlam RCMP non-emergency line at 604-945-1550 to report suspicious activity, or 911 in the event of an emergency. Coquitlam RCMP say the annual initiative is designed to reduce crime while helping ensure a safe and secure holiday season for the community.
