Coquitlam is planning a new off-leash dog park in the Burquitlam-Lougheed area of Southwest Coquitlam, the city said in a news release. City Council has directed staff to explore two potential sites within Brookmere Park, with separate areas for small and large dogs.

City staff have developed design guidelines that consider park size, fencing, surfacing, and amenities such as benches, lighting, water, and shade.

“These considerations aim to create a safe, functional, and enjoyable space that meets the needs of a growing neighbourhood while minimizing conflicts with other park users,” the release said.

Community feedback on the proposed design will be sought in early 2026 through Coquitlam’s online engagement platform, Let’s Talk Coquitlam.  The final design will be refined based on this input before being presented to Council for approval. If approved, construction could start in mid-to-late 2026.

The need for additional dog-friendly spaces has grown as the Burquitlam-Lougheed population increased nearly 18% between 2011 and 2021. Currently, the area has no formal off-leash facilities, though Brookmere and Cottonwood Parks are popular with dog owners.

Coquitlam currently has two off-leash dog parks in Miller Park and Mundy Park. The city aims to support responsible use of public spaces while providing safe areas for dogs and their owners.
