A 19-year-old Coquitlam man is facing over $670 in fines and a seven-day vehicle impoundment after he was allegedly caught speeding and using his cell phone directly under a new “BC Hwy Patrol Ahead. Drive Safe.” warning sign on Highway 1. The incident occurred on June 28, 2025, at approximately 4:30 p.m.

According to BC Highway Patrol, an officer was positioned under one of the recently installed oversized highway signs when a westbound white Mercedes sedan was observed travelling at 134 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.

“It’s alleged that the 19-year-old Coquitlam man who was driving didn’t see the warning sign, or the police officer, because he was also using his cell phone while speeding,” stated Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol.

Due to the “totality of circumstances,” including an existing driving prohibition against the individual, the driver was issued several infractions for speeding and using a phone while driving. He will be appearing in court at a later date.

“Sometimes life gives you a sign. Make an effort to slow down and enjoy the drive. You might avoid getting ticketed and towed,” reminded Corporal McLaughlin.

Please tell our local governments that traffic enforcement, not only for speeding, but idiotic displays of recklessness and lack of basic driving skill will no longer be tolerated by us safe, sane drivers. As car numbers on our roads increase, so should surveillance and enforcement.

The long corridor between mallardville and Cape Horn is a notorious section at night. Speeds up to 200 kmph I’ve witnessed. Almost sucks the doors off my car when passed.
