Child dead after speedboat hits inflatable tube in North Vancouver

Staff report
June 8, 2025 3:45pm

North Vancouver RCMP continue to investigate a serious boat collision that claimed the life of a child. It’s alleged that a speedboat travelling off the waters of Cates Park struck the two children on the inflatable tube, police said in a press release.

The incident occurred on June 7, 2025, at approximately 6:30 p.m., when police received multiple calls about a serious collision involving a speedboat and two children on an inflatable tube that was being towed by another vessel. One child did not survive and was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.

The boat operator who struck the inflatable tube is in custody. “Alcohol and speed may have been a factor in the collision, and as the investigation continues, officers will work to uncover all available evidence pointing to the cause of this collision,” said Corporal Mansoor Sahak, Media Relations Officer for the North Vancouver RCMP. “Our sincerest condolences to the child’s family and friends as they deal with this tragic loss of life. North Vancouver RCMP Victim Services is engaged and providing support to the family. Anyone affected by this sad incident can contact Victim Services at 604-969-7540.”

Police have received multiple calls from witnesses, but urge anyone who may have witnessed or recorded the incident to call police. Contact the North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311 and quote file 25-11599.
