Port Coquitlam will close McAllister Avenue to traffic on Saturday, Sept. 6, for its third annual Car Free Day festival. The event runs from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and is expected to draw thousands of residents and visitors.
The festival, presented by TransLink, will feature an expanded footprint, two stages, family activities, food trucks, and live entertainment. New this year is the Leigh Square fountain show, with performances scheduled for 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
“Car Free Day is a fantastic initiative that encourages our community to think differently about how we move around our city,” Mayor Brad West said in a statement. “It’s a chance to connect with neighbours, enjoy our vibrant downtown, and discover the many benefits of active and sustainable transportation.”
Highlights of the event include a family stage in Leigh Square, live music, roving entertainers, arts and crafts, mini golf, a ninja obstacle course, and a bicycle skills zone. Local restaurants and breweries will serve food and drinks, and electric vehicles will also be on display. Full schedules and a list of activities are available at portcoquitlam.ca/carfreeday.
Cyclists can take advantage of a free bike valet located at McAllister Avenue and Donald Avenue. TransLink is also encouraging attendees to take a “car-free pledge” and arrive by transit, bike, or on foot. The event is part of TransLink’s wider Ride & Shine campaign, which promotes sustainable travel through bike valet services, summer destination discounts, and a series of Car Free festivals across Metro Vancouver.
Cllr. Nancy McCurrach, council designate for arts, culture, heritage, and environment, said the expanded programming reflects Port Coquitlam’s vision for a more livable and environmentally friendly community. “Car Free Day, with its expanded footprint and Kids Stage in Leigh Square, offers a richer downtown experience,” she said.
Car Free Day events take place in cities across Canada to promote sustainable transportation and community connection. Port Coquitlam’s festival is funded by TransLink, with support from the Port Coquitlam Business Improvement Association, Global BC, and Vancouver is Awesome.
