Burnaby Tesla driver arrested after fluid trail leads police to hit-and-run suspect

Staff report
March 10, 2025 5:12pm

A Tesla driver in Burnaby led police straight to his location after allegedly fleeing a hit-and-run—leaving behind a trail of fluid and a piece of his vehicle.

On February 10, 2025, at around 11:30 p.m., Burnaby RCMP responded to a hit-and-run report near McKee Street and McGregor Avenue. A caller reported that a vehicle had struck two parked cars before speeding away without stopping.

At the scene, officers found a fragment of the suspect vehicle’s fender, which bore the marking “Model X.” They also spotted a fluid trail leading away from the crash. Following the evidence, investigators tracked the trail through an alley and onto a residential property.

Police confirmed the vehicle owner’s safety before arresting him for failing to remain at the collision scene. The Tesla was seized, along with footage from its onboard camera system. “This was a fluid investigation—our officers simply followed the evidence,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj of Burnaby RCMP. “While ‘X’ didn’t necessarily mark the spot, ‘Model X’ definitely helped identify the suspect vehicle.”
