Burnaby man drowns while swimming with fiancé in Cypress Provincial Park

A Burnaby man is feared dead after he vanished beneath the surface of Cabin Lake on Cypress Mountain Sunday evening.

West Vancouver police say the 29-year-old was swimming across the alpine lake with his fiancée around 6:30 p.m. on June 15 when he began to struggle in open water. “There were several independent witnesses who saw the young man in distress and observed his companion attempting to assist him,” Sgt. Chris Bigland said. “Unfortunately, he slipped beneath the surface of the water and has not been seen since.”

North Shore Rescue crews and West Vancouver firefighters searched the water shortly after the incident but were forced to stop when daylight faded. A joint recovery operation by West Vancouver Police, North Shore Rescue and the RCMP Underwater Recovery Unit resumed this morning, June 16.

“This is a complex mission given the location of the scene and the equipment required,” Bigland added, urging hikers to avoid the Cabin Lake area while the search is underway. The victim’s family has been notified. Once the body is recovered, the BC Coroners Service will take over the investigation.

Police offered condolences to the family and thanked bystanders who stepped in to help. Anyone affected by what they witnessed is encouraged to contact victim services at 604-925-7468.
