A B.C. bookkeeper has been sentenced for nearly $1 million in tax evasion through false GST filings. After pleading guilty in B.C, Aeddy Leung received a conditional sentence of two years less a day, followed by two years of probation. Provincial Court on April 15.

According to a news release by CRA, the sentence was handed down at Robson Square in Vancouver.

Leung willfully evaded GST/HST remittance and submitted false tax returns while serving as the Quality Hotel Airport (South) and the Coast Vancouver Airport Hotel bookkeepers. The Canada Revenue Agency investigation found Leung filed false GST/HST returns and failed to submit returns altogether for the 2014 to 2018 tax years, resulting in $987,863 in evaded taxes.

The CRA credited the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) for its role in the investigation.

“Combatting tax evasion is essential to maintaining the integrity of Canada’s tax system,” the CRA said in a statement. “The majority of Canadians pay their taxes in full and on time. The CRA holds those who try to avoid taxes accountable to ensure the system is fair.”

Leung must also repay the full taxes owed, including interest and penalties. The CRA warned that failing to comply with tax laws can lead to reassessments, fines, jail time, and a criminal record. It said it will continue using all available tools to pursue individuals and businesses who underreport income or make false claims.
