Port Coquitlam has opened applications for its 2026 Financial Assistance Program, which provides subsidies to help residents access recreation, arts, sports, and camps. The City announced the new intake on Dec. 2, stating that the program is designed to reduce financial barriers for individuals and families. Applications are now easier to submit through a new online form. More information and the application portal are available here.
According to the City of Port Coquitlam, more than 1,750 residents received over $63,000 in subsidies in 2025, a 17% increase from 2024, when more than 1,500 residents benefitted from the program. Eligible participants can receive a 75% discount on activities, including camps, and a complimentary One City Pass that provides free drop-in access to swimming, skating, fitness, racquetball, squash, and gym sports.
Mayor Brad West said in the announcement that the City wants every family, regardless of income, to have the ability to participate in local recreation opportunities. He said the program helps ensure that cost is never a barrier for residents seeking to stay active and engaged.
The financial assistance program supports active and healthy lifestyles by offering reduced-cost access to inclusive recreation and arts services. According to the City, eligible adults can receive up to $200 per calendar year and a 75% discount on recreation programs and memberships. Children and youth aged 0 to 18 can receive up to $500 per year, along with the same 75% discount.
Councillor Paige Petriw, the Council designate for community experience, celebrations, events and inclusion, said the ongoing growth of the program reflects the City’s commitment to making recreation accessible for everyone. She said removing financial barriers strengthens community connections and supports a sense of belonging.
The City also highlighted several additional supports. These include free facility access for personal assistants who support recreation patrons, and Recreation Program Support to help children and youth participate in registered activities. Families facing socioeconomic barriers may also access Canadian Tire Jumpstart funding for organized sports and recreation.
Other low-cost and free opportunities include swimming, skating, arts and culture programs, and social recreation activities through Wilson Seniors and Youth services. Students in School District 43 can participate through the Grade 5 Get Active! and Grade 6 Stay Active! cards, which offer free drop-in access.
